June 2016
Due to the rain that has fallen during the day today coupled with tomorrows forecast, with regret we have decided to cancel tomorrows Sports Day. A new date will be arranged and we will inform you ASAP. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
Dart lead the way at Cyclo-Cross during debut performance
April 2016
Dartington Primary School entered the Cyclo-Cross event at Stover School for the first time during April and came away worthy champions in the 3/4 boys event with other age groups equally doing the school proud with superb performances across the board. The 3/4 girls led the way and put in strong performances from the start with a team score of 36 resulting in the squad finishing as partnership runners up. Team scores are calculated by adding the positions of the first three children from each school in each race but it wouldn't have taken the best mathematicians to work out that the 3/4 boys were partnership champions with Dartington's first three boys finishing in 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. This is such an achievement from the boys and considering we also took 5th and 8th positions within the top 10 meant Dartington were very strong in this category. Unfortunately we had just one child from 5/6 girls taking part. Luna raced a superb race finishing in 16th place. Her individual score was added to two last place finishes to create a score for the first three children over the line for Dartington. To everyones amazement, Luna's team score was good enough to not finish last and that a whole team of three children finished behind Luna. In the staff's view, this achievement matches the 3/4 boys 1st position and Luna should be very proud of this excellent achievement. The 5/6 boys were last up and had to race three laps of the gruelling track. The boys did excellently well finishing in 5th place overall to cap a brilliant afternoon of sport for Dartington. Thank you to all of the parents for transporting their children to Stover with all of their bikes and helmets.

Children excel in latest Badminton competition
April 2016
Dartington's Badminton squad met again this summer term at Teignmouth Community School's wonderful Alive fitness centre. The children warmed up and ranked themselves 1-4 so that they could play the equivalent numbered person from the opposition schools. During the morning, the children played singles matches in a timed format with the winning person gaining one point for their team. The children did superbly well at the latest meeting just losing once to the overall winners. This superb result means the team has come on so far from their first meeting in September where they won just one game. Well done to the whole squad, you have done the school so proud!

Kurlers miss out on medals at Winter Games
March 2016
Dartington, in partnership with Bidwell Brook, entered two squads into the next 'edition' of the School Games, this time held at Torbay Leisure Centre on Thursday 17th March. Picking up silver and gold medals at the previous two School Games, expectations were high! Kieran took the two squads and commented that "The children had a fantastic day with some really close matches". Unfortunately the squads ended up on the wrong side of a few really close results meaning that neither team qualified for a medal position. However, the children did superbly well and enjoyed their day of New Age Kurling. Dartington A and B were also lucky enough to play each other during the day where Dartington A took the plaudits, again in a really close encounter. Well done to everyone who took part, your certificates will be with you on Monday.
Alongside the Kurlers, A small cohort of Dartington children were lucky enough to experience a few taster sports that the children would not normally have access to in school. These activities included Taekwondo, where the coach took the children on an hour's intensive course, a chance to have a go at the kurling like the other children and, most children's favourite activity, laser shooting where the children had to hit a target the size of a golf ball from around 20 metres. The children absolutely loved their day of activities and cannot wait to go again to trial some different sports. At the end of the day, the children also had a go on the Taiko drums as part of the cultural element of the games.
Well done to everyone who took part, you all did the school and the Dartmoor partnership proud.
Kurling squads: Jamie, Jayden, York, Holly, Kian, Tom, Anthony, Morgan and Eloise
Taster sport squad: Ella, Hugo, Ben, Kayne, Emma, Alisha and Silva

Superstars enjoy a morning of sport
March 2016
Dartington superstars group met at Newton Abbot College on Tuesday 15th March for a fun packed morning of sports. The group participated in a range of activities, some of which are offered in school and some of which the children do not have access to. During the morning, the children took part in athletics type events as well as general catching and throwing skills. They also participated in activities including parachute games, sitting volleyball using a beach ball, boccia, which is a type of accuracy game similar to the French game boules, and New Age Kurling which is an adapted form of the Scottish game Curling but using ball bearings rather than ice to bring it to a larger audience. It was also this event that inspired some to take up New Age Kurling at the Devon Games that the school has had so much success at recently.
The children really enjoyed their morning of taster activities and are looking forward to the next opportunity next term. Well done to everyone who was part of the two squads and thank you to Maria, our German student who came with us which allowed more children to attend.

Dart participate in first ever Sitting Volleyball champs
March 2016
Dartington took part in the first ever South Dartmoor Partnership Sitting Volleyball tournament held at Teign School on March 11th. Both secondary and primary schools under the South Dartmoor 'umbrella of schools' were invited to this new venture and it was an event where both ages took part against each other. Dartington were the only mainstream state primary school that entered and were up against it competing against children in key stage 3 and 4. This did not deter the squad as they kept up with the faster pace of the secondary school game playing well against all of the other schools even though they had no previous experience of the sport.
The children's results are as follows against their secondary opponents:
Coobe Pafford Secondary 14v21
Southbrook A 16v17
South Dartmoor B 12v16
Coombeshead 14v13
Newton Abbot College 12v15
All of the matches were close but unfortunately the sqaud were often on the wrong side of a result. This put them into the 9th/10th playoff where they were up against Teign School, the hosts of the event. The squad played well in their last game and won the playoff 12v8 resulting in a 9th place finish out of 12 schools. This is such a great result considering they were playing teams containing children that were up to 7 years older than them. Well done to everyone involved, you did the school and Pudsey, the Dartington mascot, proud.

Cycling
March 2016
Children in years 3-6 took part in numerous squads at the latest partnership event: Cycling. The children took their bikes to Stover school on a pre-laid course around the grounds of the school and got stuck in to the challenging course due to Dartington using the course last which resulted in sticky conditions. The children all did amazingly well and whilst sporting their numbered bibs, were on a race with the clock to get around the course in the quickest possible time. The first race the children took part in was the team time trial. This involved the year 5/6's and year 3/4's completing the course individually, as quickly as possible to then tag their team mate, who then repeated the process. The second race was an endurance race where the course became more challenging taking the children through the woods. The overall winner from our school for year 5/6 in this race was Calum who demonstrated his natural talent and ability in a very quick time. In second place was Crow, followed very closely through the whole course by Zac who raced in the year 5/6 team.
We were very lucky to have Mrs Foucher supporting us as her son Leo in year 3 also competed. Here is her review - On Tuesday evening I attended the school Cyclocross competition at Stover, both as a parent as my son (Leo, Y3) was competing, and also as a supporting staff member. For those who aren't familiar with cyclocross, it is fantastic fun cycling event along a cross country course, through mud and on some very technical sections up and down hill. The children competed in relay teams on a shorter route and then individually to achieve their best time on a longer track. There were some excellent performances from all the children, particularly Calum who looked like a true professional and who proudly displayed his "yellow jersey" at the end. However, what always strikes me about our children at Dartington is how friendly and supportive they are towards each other at these events. This competition gathered a group of children from across the school from years 3-6 and despite not all knowing each other initially, their mutual respect and support for each other was really impressive. We are now awaiting the results from all the other schools who took part in order to know our final standing. However, the fun the children had and the buzz around discovering a new sport made the event a huge success regardless of the scores.

Swimming Gala
March 2016
With year 5/6 out on a music commitment, it was a young year 4 squad that travelled to Exeter for a swimming gala against three other schools from the partnership. Each child then sported a green swim hat each as the team looked the part ready for action. The children took part in a variety of races across all of the strokes from breaststroke and front crawl to butterfly! As the day wore on however, the children became quite tired as they had to race a lot which wasnt helped by the unfortunate illness to Ella half way through. However, the children did amazingly well considering they were up against swimmers from years 5 and 6 and finished the odd race in 3rd position. Well done to everyone who took part, you did the school very proud picking up the spirit of the games award for super team play and encouragement. Well done everyone!

Cross Country Cancelled
March 2016
Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather, the cross-country event has been cancelled this evening. We hope a new date will be arranged and we will keep runners posted if this is occurs. Whatever happens, there will be another opportunity in the summer term for our keen runners!
Third place for the Gym Squad
March 2016
Dartington Primary School's year 3/4 Gymnastics squad were in action on Tuesday 1st March as they performed their floor sequence and vault in front of judges. The squad had practiced hard during the week leading up to the event and it all came down to their final performances at KEVICC. Each child had to perform their floor routine which was a pre-learnt sequence of rolls, balances and jumps. Their individual scores were added up and coupled with their score from the vault session, created an overall score for each squad. Dartington finished a wonderful 3rd place out of the eight teams taking part and get to take home a 3rd place certificate in next Monday's assembly. Well done to the squad for a super effort. Good luck to South Brent who represent the Totnes schools at the finals.

Dart take bronze as they narrowly miss out on a County spot
February 2016
Dartington entered two teams into this years Hockey Partnership finals held at South Dartmoor on Monday 22nd February. Dartington white, playing in the friendly competition participated against some familiar teams from the Dart Hockey League as well as some newer teams from the wider area. Buckfastleigh were the whites first opponents. They battled hard against a strong team and although they did not get the rub of green with some of the umpiring decisions, they worked very hard for each other but unfortunately two goals were conceeded as they went down 2v0 to what turned out to be the overall champions. Christow were up next and again against an unfamiliar opponent. Again the team battled hard with some super defending but lost by a solitary goal 1v0. Ipplepen were Dartington's last group game fixture and being a familiar opponent, the team put in a more confident performance. A super goal from Cai allowed the squad to take home a credible draw 1v1. This put the squad in the 7th/8th playoff and played against Shaldon. A mix up in the two Shaldon teams meant they ended up playing their stronger side but this did not deter the children from putting in 100% effort and working really hard for each other playing with just 5 players. Unfortunately they were on the wrong end of a 4v0 scoreline but should be proud of how hard they worked for each other against a strong team. Well done to the whole squad.
Squad: Ben, Ebony, Evie, Leo, Cowen
Dartington Green started off against arch enemy and local rivals Broadhempston. Previously the two teams have only been separated by the odd goal in the many years they have been playing each other and this occasion was no different. In what was a very close game, Broadhempston scored the only goal as their strongest player crept into the D and struck a hard shot into the bottom right hand corner. Oscar had a glorious opportunity to equalise but couldn't control the ball as he found himself free at the back post. Dartington went into their next game against Shaldon knowing a win would keep them in the race for medals but unfortunately a lack of running and marking meant Shaldon took the lead. As the game went on, the squad regained their confidence and grew into it finally equalising through a strike from Felix. Time ran out on the squad as they ended up drawing 1v1 in a game they ought to have won. Knowing only a win would be good enough against Canada Hill to progress into the 3rd/4th place final, the squad worked really hard for each and it seemed as the match wore on that it was going to be an agonising 0v0 draw with dartington knocking on the door but no goal coming. As they pushed for the goal with an all or nothing attitude, they left the Canada Hill player free inside the D whose shot was somehow stopped on the line by Oscar on his reverse side. This amazing stop allowed the squad to realise they could still win the game and went up the other end with Joe scoring the only goal of the game and with a 1v0 scoreline enough to qualify for the 3rd/4th playoff. Broadhempston B were the opponents for the medals and the squad knew if they played their best they would get the result they were after. They did exactly that and left the best till last as they ran out 2v0 winners with goals from Joe and Felix. well done everyone!

Sports Hall Athletics
February 2016
Twelve children from Dartington Primary School took part in a Sports Hall Athletics event where the top two schools progress to the County finals at the end of the month. Fielding a young squad, each of the twelve children equipped themselves superbly during the day in a wide range of activities including triple jump, chest push and throwing in the morning followed by the track events in the afternoon with a plethora of relay and sprint races. Considering the young squad that was entered, it was a great achievement to finish 10th out of the 13 schools that participated. Well done to everyone that represented the school. A huge thank you to Angie and trainee Miss Henley, without your help at the last minute, we would not have been able to attend.

The Grove A 0v0
This was a really close game with both teams defending well, great blocks coming in from both Lola and Ben to prevent the opposition from breaking through. Grove A had most of the chances throughout to game but fantastic goal keeping from Cowen, who pulled out a double save, meant that he prevented Grove A from taking the lead. Final score Dartington B, 0 Grove A, 0.
The Grove B 5v0
An amazing performance from Dartington as they controlled the game throughout and the goals wouldn’t stop coming. Reuben’s opening goal had a touch of quality as he back-heeled it into the net. Minutes later, Oscar followed this up with a great strike, smashing the ball in the back of the net. On the reset, Oscar yet again took a shot at goal, that bounced off the crossbar before he followed it up with another great goal to make the game 3-0. Dartington were still hungry for goals as a great pass from Odin set-up Crow, who hit the ball sweetly into the back of the net, and then again with only 1minute of the game left! 5 – 0 Dartington B.
Landscove 1v1
After their last game ended in a draw, Dartington were out to prove themselves against a tough opposition. The game was tough at first as both teams were passing the ball well and working hard to defend. But the breakthrough came with Odin, Oscar and Crow combining some great tackles with beautiful passes, setting Reuben up for a great hit and the lead! But with only minutes left, Landscove were able to sneak a goal back as their striker found space and was able to knock it past the keeper. Dartington B, 1 and Landscove, 1
St Johns A 0v2
An unfortunate loss for Dartington despite their great team spirit and co-operation. They worked hard for the first half of the game with some fantastic blocks coming in from Lola, Ben and Odin. Reuben and Odin were trying hard to push the oppositions goal but the pressure was too great. Despite some amazing saves from Oscar, who was able to block their striker one-on-one over and over, St. John’s were able to sneak through two goals. Crow work hard throughout the game but the chases just wouldn’t fall for Dartington! End result, Dartington B, 0 and St.John, 2.
Overall, every player on the Dartington B team worked hard throughout all their games. Whether they won or lost, they showed amazing respect for the opposition. They worked together as a team and encouraged each other to try their best no matter the outcome. Well Done!
Thank you to trainee Mr Turner for helping the squad with some great results and for the super in depth write up.

Devon Winter Games
January 2016
On the back of finishing Runners Up at New Age Kurling during the previous Devon Games, Dartington took two teams to the this latest Devon Games held at the Life Centre, Plymouth. Dartington Primary School teamed up with local neighbours Bidwell Brook to offer children from both schools a variety of sporting events that aims to provide the children with a life-long passion for sport. With the local news reporters from Spotlight in attendance as well as guest appearances from Stephen Dodd (Kayak) and Elizabeth Haywood (Badminton), who both won medals at the latest Special Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where 6500 athletes from all over the world participated, the pressure was on the children to perform from the very first match.
With both of Dartington's squads being the only representative squads from the Dartmoor Sports Partnership, Dartington were really flying the flag for Dartmoor single-handedly. The day started with a little practice time for both squads and during this time, Stephen Dodd took the time from his busy schedule to work with the Dartington children to give them 'some tips' on how to win their games, all captured on BBC's Spotlight programme aired at 6.30pm on Friday 29th January. The training session from the Olympic medalist certainly helped the squads as both of them did amazingly well during the day developing their New Age Kurling techniques fighting off all of the competition from the other areas of Devon to take home the gold and silver medals. The children thoroughly enjoyed their day in Plymouth winning the medals they won as well as holding a real Olympic Medal. On top of this, Kian won a special medal for honesty as well as Morgan winning a medal for respect. These are two of the six disciplines that make up the 'spirit of the games' which is something all athletes should aspire to to be well rounded athletes.
To finish the day, the children had the fantastic opportunity to use the facilities down at the life centre in Plymouth, including their state of the art climbing wall. The children were invited by one of the climbing instructors to have a go at something new and that is what they did. Once the children were equipped with a helmet and a harness, they got to grips with bouldering and climbing to see how high they could climb.
The children had a wonderful day and very much look forward to their next opportunity.

Swimming Bonanza
January 2016
Dartington took eight lucky children to Exeter to take part in a swimming event designed to allow the children to gain confidence whilst in water. The children had such good fun from the first minute to the very last taking part in a variety of water based activities from passing a ball over their heads and through their legs in a race against other schools as well as swimming through a hoop underwater. All of their children swam two whole lengths during the afternoon and they all massively improved as the day wore on. Well done to everyone who took part! We are super proud!
Slam Dunk The Basketball Fun
January 2016
The Basketball squad descended on the sports hall at KEVICC on Tuesday 26th January for their next Basketball league meeting. Having played Basketball for the first time during the last meeting, and having to play in front of Torbay Tigers Basketball coach, the squad were in buoyant mood to improve on their only previous experience. A quick recap of some positional play that was rehearsed during afterschool club last term, the team were ready for action with Diptford C up first. A solid performance by the whole squad resulted in a confidence boosting 6v0 win with baskets from Felix and Caspian. The confidence was already starting to improve as they showed in the second game against Diptford B, again winning the match by the scoreline with baskets this time from Cai and Felix. The Grove were Dartington's next opponents and it seemed as if Dartington were to continue their good form and consistency again recording a 6v0 victory with a hat-trick from Felix but great all round play from the whole team to set Felix up with the baskets. In particular, his second basket where Ben intercepted the Grove attack and found Felix who dribbled from underneath his own basket to his opponents basket to slot home. Great movement from Lola allowed the space for Felix to run into as well as Cai recognising Felix had gone and filled in the gap he had left. A super team basket! Diptford D were the next opponents and a super game from both teams allowed for a thrilling 2v2 draw with Dartington's Felix gaining the advantage but the team were pegged back by Diptford's super player to concede and make it 2v2. The last match was against Diptford A who had won all of their games up until their game with Dartington but it was Dartington that came out on top with two baskets from Felix but the whole team defended well as a unit to stop the Diptford threat. Well done to the whole squad who played superbly well. A great effort.

Dartington B
St Johns A 1v1
It was an end-to-end game with both teams defending really well until a curling shot from Cowen flew past the keeper into the back of the net. The game was close with Totnes St. Johns on the counter attack pushing the Dartington defence. An unfortunate tackle meant that Totnes St. Johns had a free kick just short of the half way line. A great shot from the opposition flew into the top-right corner ending the game in a 1 – 1 draw.
Diptford 1v0
A steady game which saw the Diptford team on the back foot for most of it. Dartington had some great tackles from Ben, Odin and Lola who were constantly pushing the Diptford defence. Both Oscar and Cowen had a few chances just but a brilliantly crossed ball was the decider, as it landed at the feet of Crow, who calmly placed the ball in the back of the net. Dartington 1, Diptford 0.
Landscove 0v0
It was a great game for Reuben who in the first 5 minutes of the match pulled out a great stop with his legs tipping the ball around the outside of the Dartington goal. And only a few minutes later, a great through ball meant Landscove was one-on-one with the keeper yet again. But Reuben stood his ground and shut down the shot before clearing the ball from his net. Dartington were unlucky not to score when a shot from Oscar was saved in the last minutes of the game. End score; Dartington 0, Landscove 0.
Overall, every player on the Dartington team played extremely well. They had a solid defence throughout all their games and created some great chances when they had the ball. They showed incredible sportsmanship at the end of each game, shaking hands and being the first to give three cheers to their opposition. Well done. Thanks to Mr Turner for attending and the for writing the match report.

Futsal
January 2016
A new year and a new sport for the children at Dartington as both boys and girls in years 4 and 5 took part in the local Futsal event held at Paignton Community and Sports Academy. The girls got off to a very tricky start against some well drilled teams losing their first two games 5v0 and 3v0 respectively. However, they slowly grew into the tournament and started to pose more of a threat to their opponents with each match. With Lola scoring three times in the tournament and Ebony G twice, Dartington really improved as the day went on. Although the squad lost each of their games, it shows how well they applied themselves losing 3v2 to Shiphay and just 1v0 to Barton who eventually qualified for the County finals with super defending from Ebony W, Tallulah and Evie. Well done to everyone who played - you did the school proud.
The boys were up next on the following day against some very tough opposition with many schools having professional club's coaches at their disposal. Abbey School were the squads first opponents and although they worked incredibly hard for each other, Dartington were on the wrong end of an 8v2 scoreline with Oscar and Elliot getting both goals. Their second game against St Marychurch wasn't much easier but the squad were much more competitive as Oscar scored to make it 1v2. The game was quite close with just a few minutes left but St Marychurch showed their class as they scored a few goals in a late onslaught to take the match 7v1. Exminster were next up and the squad were feeling quite upbeat about the game. With it being a fellow non-Torbay school who don't play on a regular basis in the Torbay League, the squad started strong and their confidence grew as the game went on eventually taking the match 6v1 with goals from Oscar and Elliot. The defence of Sam, Henry and Charlie did a really good job keeping out the Exminster threat too. Having just the minimum of 5 players, the squad were starting to fatigue going into the last match against Barton Hill as the other schools could squad rotate. Barton Hill took the match 6v0 but the squad picked up a vital win in their first ever year of taking part in this tournament, especially as the whole squad will be available for selection next year as Dartington were a young squad this time around. Well done everyone!

Badminton
January 2016
The new year calendar year was just four days old when Dartington's year 4 Badminton squad met up for the second time to compete against many others schools from the wider local area. Having travelled to Newton Abbot last time around, the squad were glad to know that the latest venue to host the Badminton competition was KEVICC. The squad did brilliantly well and have improved so much since September with every member of the squad winning at least one match to help their team pick up points. It started off with a hugely difficult task as Dartington were fixtured with Canada Hill A, last meetings' champions. Although each individual match was closer than last time around, the squad started with a tricky 4v0 defeat. Diptford were up next and although Ella won her rubber, the squad went down 3v1. Better things were to come though and every member of the squad won their individual match to win the fixture against Exminster 4v0. Another strong Canada Hill C team put 4 past Dartington again as they lost 4v0 but that did not dent their confidence going into the game against Wolborough, after the first two rubbers, Dartington found themselves 2v0 down but fought back strong with Ella and Finn winning theirs to earn a 2v2 draw. The last match was against Bradley Barton, who also featured in the final in September but their class was too much in Dartington's final game as the took the win 4v0. Well done to everyone in the squad, you are all improving so much and up against children in year 5. Well done everyone!
Hockey Week 5
December 2015
Dartington White
The final week is here and Dartington knew that a win today would confirm at least a third place finish. South Brent A, a team that was up there at the top of the league were Dartington's first opponents. A real solid start from Dartington with great defending from Cai and Harry, backed up with super support from wingers Maddie and Emily really started to frustrate South Brent A and that first goal wasn't coming. However South Brent piled on the pressure and Dartington could not clear the ball from their goal and that opening goal arrived. Unfortunately all of the hard work that Dartington put into the first 10 minutes of the match was undone in the last few minutes as Dartington heads dropped and a lack of discipline to individual roles resulted in another three easy goals for South Brent giving the opposition a 4v0 win. This result did not matter too much in Dartington's bid for third however as they knew that a win was still enough to clinch the final medal position. In this winner takes all match, it was Dartington that was applying all of the pressure from the start with chance after chance going begging. Oscar came close hiting the side board, Felix had a shot that was stopped on the line by a foot and Tallulah also had a shot that was blocked. The chances kept coming but as Dartington sent everyone forward to get that important goal, they left a gap at the back and Canada Hill took full advantage of that as a shot from the edge of the D found itself into the bottom right hand corner and a goal that left the squad devastated. Dartington White ended up a very credible fourth out of the 12 teams that entered and didn't really get what they deserved in the league this year. The squad will learn from this and it will make them stronger for the next hoxkey event later in the year. Well done to the whole squad over 5 weeks and hope to see may of you join the local club to take your hockey further.

Dartington Green
With the determination to earn a third position in the cup to receive the bronze medal, Dartington Green played their best hockey of the league this year. The first game against Berry Pomeroy was a tightly fought battle until their strong forward found a gap in Dartington's defence not once, but twice. Sophia fought in vein to stop the Berry forward but she calmly slotted home twice in a matter of minutes to give Berry Pomeroy a commanding lead. This did not dent Dartington's confidence and they battled until the final whistle, both Cowen and Lola having chances to get back on terms but their luck ran out in front of goal with the first match ending in a 2v0 loss. Their last match of the league was against a new team in Diptford this year. Again, another closely fought game was in store for Dartington Green and there was some great battling play from Leo to stop the Diptford threat. Dartington Green developed in confidence as the game went on and with just a few minutes remaining, Cowen played a delightful ball across the D to Lola, who was in space at the back post. Lola had time to control the ball and flick it into the back of the net to give Dartington the lead. The squad held on for a memorable win and what a great way to end the league. Well done to everyone who was part of the sqaud, you did the school proud and we hope you join Dart Hockey Club to further your skills.

Leaders assist at Key Stage 1 Festival
December 2015
As part of Dartington Primary School's push to develop Physical Education, the school were given a unique opportunity to take some children to KEVICC to be assistant leaders at their Key Stage 1 Multi Skills event. The selected children walked over to KEVICC in the morning and were assigned a 'station' to work at. They worked alongside the KEVICC leaders to deliver a wide range of sporting opportunities including cup stacking, ten pin bowling and dance. Some of their roles included time keeping, being in charge of playing music, keeping a record of the score or explaining tasks.
The Dartington children did superbly well all morning resulting in some groups being left solely in charge by our year 5 leaders. Mr Lyndon, the Sports Coordinator at KEVICC stated, "I thought your leaders were brilliant and I hope to use them again for future events." Well done everyone. You all did amazing well.

Hockey Week 4
November 2015
Dartington White
Dartington White started week 4 in the cup competition due to qualifying from the league over the past three weeks. They got off to a great start playing The Grove A first. Nini opened the scoring with a quick self pass down the right hand side, she entered the top of the 'D' and a slick finish into the bottom corner gave Dartington the best start they could have hoped for. In their next attack, Oscar chased down their defender to steal the ball from them and slot home the second to give Dartington a deserved 2v0 lead. A brace of goals from Felix finally gave Dartington a strong 4v0 win. South Brent B were the next opponents and although Dartington chucked the kitchen sink at their opponents, the elusive goal never came which resulted in a frustrating 0v0 draw for the players. Broadhempston A were their final opponents. The squad knew that this was going to be a tough game and got off to a poor start going behind to a reverse stick shot. Dartington grew into the game and started to control the midfield battle but the equaliser wasn't looking like coming which was all important. The coach decided to change formation in a bid to get the equaliser. That equaliser nearly arrived when Felix took the ball into the D and hit a powerful shot at goal which hit the inside of the left post, shot across the goal mouth and with the spin on the ball took the ball off the game line past the right post. If that had gone in, the game would have changed but it didn't and as the team were going for the equaliser with their new formation, it left gaps at the back and sadly let in two goals in the last minute to lose their first game 3v0. A solid first week of results and on course for medals if the team can put in a decent performance in their final week next week.

Dartington Green
With the addition of Cowen to Dartington Green, having played the last two weeks with just six players, things were looking good going into the first week of the cup competition. The first opponents were Broadhempston B. Within three minutes, the ball was passed accurately through a defensive gap to new boy Cowen who slotted home the opener to put Dartington Green 1v0 up. The team continued to play well as the game went on with good play up front from Cowen, Lola and Reuben, but unfortunately Broadhempston were given the opportunity to equalise with a few minutes to go to level the first match 1v1. The confidence was beginning to develop from their first match draw and they took this into their second game against The Grove B. A great battling performance kept The Grove B at bay but their key player, who plays hockey regularly, was the difference between the two sides and his solo goal was enough to secure victory for The Grove 1v0. Not deterred, Dartington Green went into the final match knowing a positive result would leave them with a good chance of a medal finish going into the last week and a super defensive display from Sophia and Ben against Ipplepen, last years champions, meant they drew their last game of the week 0v0. Well done to everyone who played, a fantastic week of hockey - you really are improving so much!

5/6 Netball
November 2015
Dartington's year 5 and 6 Netball squads took to the astro at KEVICC to play their first Netball tournament on Tuesday 24th November. This is the first time they have competitively played against other schools and thry initially found it quite tricky. However as the afternoon wore on, and with the help of the schools' trainee teachers, the children's understanding of the rules and how to play grew and they became more competitive in their matches. Although there was improvement in their play, the amount of defeats hit both squads hard which resulted in a low morale. Both squads need to remember a little motto: Dartington never lose, they either win or they learn. Although they did learn a lot and they improved a lot, a more positive attitude would have allowed them to seek success in their matches. Well done to everyone who played, keep practicing and the successes will follow.
Hockey Week 3
November 2015
Dartington White
Dartington White continued their superb form in week three despite only playing with six players all afternoon due to injuries and illnesses across both squads. Starting the league in fourth place, their first fixture was against third place Canada Hill. Knowing a win would secure their position in the top half when the league splits, Dartington started very strong and took the lead through Felix. Canada Hill also showed their class as they fought back to 1v1 and 2v2 after a neat passage of play from Nini and Felix allowed Felix to regain the lead for Dartington again, making the score then 2v1. After drawing level, Dartington upped the ante and a hat-trick goal from Felix was enough to secure the three points. The Grove A were up next, a solid team all season who find themselves mid table. An early strike from Oscar gave Dartington the lead, and it was merely seconds later that Dartington were able to double their lead with a fine strike from Felix. However, a lack of concentration resulted in a break away goal for the Grove A to make it 2v1 and thats how it stayed when the final whistle blew. Broadhempston A were their next opponents, a match that seemed would test the resilience of the squad considering that Broadhempston A were undefeated and had not conceeded a goal all season. The squad started brightly but found themselves a goal down when the ball could not be cleared away. This did not deter them as they sought to equalise and a quick self pass from Felix at the injection saw Broadhemspton slow to react and before he knew it Felix found himself inside the D to shoot and slot home the deserved equaliser. Unfortunately, Broadhempston had the last laugh as they scored a carbon copy of their first goal resulting a 2v1 defeat. A superb performance considering Dartington only had six players and Broadhempston conceeded their first goal of the year. In their last game of the season, Dartington secured a solid win against the newest team to hockey, Diptford. Oscar scored two very good early goals with assists from Maddie and Felix. Diptford got one back with a great solo effort from their own half. However the two goal advantage was restored when Felix made it 3v1 with a minute left on the clock. Well done to the whole squad for an excellent display with just six players. They end the first half of the season in third place and look forward to the cup competition next week.

Dartington Green
With their heads held high after a tough week 2 of the hockey tournament, Dartington B approached their first game against South Brent A with grit and determination. Even though the defence team that consisted of Ben, Sophia and Evie worked incredibly hard to fend off the opposition, South Brent A managed to score 6 goals. The attacking team supported each other to get the ball into the oppositions half and even though they managed a few times to get the ball into the D it didn’t make it past the goal line. Great sportsmanship was held by the whole team with a positive three cheers and hand shake at the end of the match. A more equal match against Broadhemptson B followed with the ball being played equally across both teams half of the pitch. With some strong, quick passes between Reuben, Lola and Leo HR, the ball entered the oppositions D many times but never made it pass the goal line. Broadhempston B came away the worthy winners of a well matched game 1v0. With only 6 players, Dartington green continued their fight for a win against Canada Hill. A strong force of Lola as midfield and Ebony and Leo HR as left and right wing put Canada Hill to the test in defending Dartington’s quick and accurate passes. Again Dartington worked strongly as a team, but unfortunately ended up 1v0 down to Canada Hill. The last game against South Brent B really tested Dartington’s determination. Tiring quickly with only 6 players on the pitch, Dartington put up a fair fight but a gap in defence allowed South Brent to score going 1v0 up. Sophia and Ben did their best to defend a strong South Brent team but unfortunately another goal was earned by South Brent as the team lost 2v0.

Boys Cricket
November 2015
The boys cricket squad met for the first time at Teignmouth Community College on Monday 23rd November. After a quick check of the rules and a last minute change in opposition due to Exminster arriving late, Dartington took on Rydon. After a slow start, the children got to grips with what was expected and clocked up a super 204 runs. Rydon came into bat with clear intent to score as many as possible and took the win with a few overs to spare. This defeat did not deter the boys and they improved massively in their final two fixtures scoring 232 against Exminster A, once they arrived, and 234 against Chudleigh. Some super play from the whole team, in particular Cowen's batting, Calum's running and Sam's bowling helped the team to improve as they went through the day. Although they were defeated in all of their games, they can hold their heads up high as this was the first time many of the children had played Cricket when compared to some of the teams who had been clearly coached and from traditional cricketing areas. Well done to everyone who represented Dartington Primary School, you did superbly!

Girls Cricket
November 2015
Ten children from Dartington took part in the Dartmoor School Sports Partnership Girls Cricket event at Seale Hayne on Wednesday 18th November. This is the first time that Dartington have entered this event and the girls were super excited to represent their school in a new sporting event for many of them. A quick scan over the rules and the girls were ready for action. Their first opponents were Canada Hill from Newton Abbot. After a slow start, and an early loss of a wicket, the team picked up through their remaining batters. Although they lost the game, Dartington scored a wonderful 210 runs. Up next was Exminster, a school that has previously done well at this event. Caitlin, the squad's captain, won the toss and elected to field first in this match. All of the girls rotated so that each one of them were in the field, and had a go at bowling and wicket keeping. The team improved from their first game and scored a superb 230 runs. Although, again they lost the game, the improvement in their play was fantastic including boundaries and wicket taking. The squads last match was against Chudleigh, who eventually finished third in the whole competition. Again, the team were on the receiving end of a loss however the improvement again in the teams play was superb. Children were batting into spaces, running when it was sensible to do so and fielding successfully. The squad scored 218 runs in their final match but against very good opposition, all of the children did superbly. Dartington finished 8th in the competition and had a wonderful afternoon of Cricket. Well done Girls!!!

Year 3/4 Netball
November 2015
Dartington sent two year 3/4 squads to this years Totnes Learning Community Netball Finals held at KEVICC on Tuesday 17th November. All of the children progressed as the afternoon went on and thoroughly enjoyed the event. Dartington 'A' and 'B', had the priviledge of being run by some of the schools' trainee teachers and together both squads developed their play through understanding their roles, positions on the court and team play. Both squads started slowly with a couple of early defeats but the wait for points wasn't long in coming as both squads picked up wins and draws. Leo was one of the Dartington A scorers with a superb finish to a good team goal. Poppy was also on the scoresheet for Dartington B with a fine goal after good team play preceeded it as Toby found Poppy in space in the 'D' to slot home the winner.
Both teams did not finish in the top three in their pool but thoroughly enjoyed the event, progressed superbly as the event wore on, and left with beaming smiles on their faces. Well done everyone! You all played brilliantly!
'A' Squad: Leo, Zac, Elliot, Ella, Evie A-E, Phoebe
'B' Squad: Kayne, Toby, Thorn, Poppy, Gabriella, Holly, Evie C

Hockey Week Two
November 2015
Dartington White
Dartington White continued their good form this week with some fantastic team displays of grit and determination to succeed. Their traditional start of 'slow and laboured' continued however with a game that consisted of 'the battle of the midfield'. With little threat at either end, their first game against Broadhempston B ended 0v0. Their second game directly followed against last years champions Ipplepen. By far the squads best performance of the year was on display as they swept aside Ipplepen with ease. Felix set up the first goal as his cross field pass found Maddie five yards out to slot home the opener to make it 1v0. Felix then scored a brace of goals, one which was brilliantly assisted by Cai to allow Dartington White to take all three points in a 3v0 win and inflict the first defeat of the season on last years champions. The Grove B were their next opponents and the squad clocked up the same scoreline, 3v0. It was Felix again that was able to show his class in front of goal by scoring his first hat-trick of the season, one goal superbly set up by the influential Oscar with a superb through ball. The last match of the week was up against a solid South Brent B team. Without the solid presence of Harry in defence, because he was required to play for Dartington Green as they had taken an injury blow, the squad played their last match with just 6 players. It did not take long for South Brent B to find the extra space with their extra player and they scored the first goal of the game with a scrappy goal that Dartington could not clear. This did not stop the team however, and the confidence of previous games told as Cai brought the team back on equal terms to make the score 1v1. A minute later Oscar won the match with the winning goal as he slotted home a lovely through ball to make the final score 2v1. This takes the team up to 4th in the league table as they go into the last round before the league splits. Well done everyone!
Squad: Nini, Emily, Tallulah, Maddie, Cai, Harry, Felix, Oscar
Dartington Green
Dartington Green team continued their focus and positive attitude this week with some great team work displaying determination and perseverance.
The first match against Diptford 0 v 0 was a well fought out match with some great defence. Dartington green team had a stong trio in attack and managed to score 2 goals past the goal line, but unfortunately both goals were disallowed as they were outside the D. The team however went into their second macth against Ipplepen with a stong team setup and their heads held high. After the ball going from end to end Ipplepen managed to score a goal past our defence. Without the presence of Ben in defence because of an injury and a second injury to Alex, Dartington were down to only 6 players. Dartington Green fought hard to regain posession but Ipplepen scored another goal meaning a 2 v 0 defeat to Dartington. Berry Pomeroy were their next opponents with a borrowed member of the White Team - Harry to replace an injured Ben. The team showed more determination than ever, using the wings and space created by a bunched up Berry Pomeroy team but unfortunately due to a lack of focus for one minute, Berry managed to sneak a goal past the defence. The last game of the week was against the Grove A. With the Dartington team having only 6 out of the 7 players and team morale low, Dartington showed great skills in defence and attack but due to the lack of players, just couldn't get the ball out of their area meaning a defeat by The Grove A of 3 v 0. Well done to all of the children for brilliant perserverance in difficult circumstances playing a lot of their games with just 6 players.

County Runners Up at Ability Games
November 2015
Three children from Dartington primary school took part in the county wide event, the Autumn Ability School Games, at Barnstaple's Tarka Tennis Centre on Wednesday 11th November.
The school games, sponsored by Sainsburys, is a unique opportunity to motivate and inspire millions of young people across the country to take part in more competitive school sport. The school games are designed to build on the magic of the 2012 Olympic Games and to enable every school and child to participate in competitive sport, including meaningful opportunities for disabled youngsters.
The children from Dartington represented their area sports partnership, the 'Dartmoor SSP', which covers a huge area from Moretonhampstead, to Totnes and across to Teignmouth. As 'Dartmoor', Dartington participated in the brand new sport of New Age Kurling taking on other schools from North and East Devon. New Age Kurling is a new sport based on traditional Curling which was designed to bring the sport to a much wider audience. New Age Kurling uses smaller stones on ball bearings resulting in the sport being able to be played on any smooth surface rather than the limitations of ice.
Not even the two hour hike up to Barnstaple could put off the squad as they battled hard in each of their games. The squad finished the day as joint second and it came down to a second place playoff match against North Devon to decide who would take home the runners up medals. After drawing the match, it went down to sudden death and three of the four Dartington stones ended up nearer the centre of the house, the name given for the target, and Dartington were awarded the playoff win to take home the silver medals.
The boys were incredibly excited to take home the silver medals and to be the second best New Age Kurling team in the County at the Ability Games. However, during their off sessions, the squad also had the opportunity to sample new sports that they don't normally have access to during school lessons which varied from indoor archery to laser shooting. These additional opportunities are to try to further inspire all of the children to take up something new to increase the amount of sporting participation.
The squad were fantastic all day and did the school and the sports partnership incredibly proud. Tom was also hand picked from the 300-400 children taking part to win an extra special gold medal. A medal was handed out for each of the six disciplines of the 'spirit of the games' - qualities that all good sports men and women require. Tom was chosen to receive the gold medal for Passion - 'giving it 100% and approach each opportunity with enthusiasm and positivity'. What a superb advert for the Dartmoor partnership and for Dartington Primary School. Well done everyone! We are proud of you all!

Superstars Excel
November 2015
Eight children from Dartington's Superstars group attended a fantastic morning of sporting opportunities held at Newton Abbot College on Tuesaday 10th November. The squad, with the help of three of our trainee teachers, participated in a range of activities throughout the morning to try to encourage them to 'have a go' at something new to attempt the children to perhaps participate at something different outside of their school environment.
The children participated in some traditional activities such as parachute games, badminton and athletic type activities to new sporting opportunities in New Age Kurling, a sport designed around Curling but using ball bearings means the sport can be played on any smooth surface, and Boccia, an activity similar to bowls.
The children had a wonderful morning in Newton Abbot and cannot wait for the next opportunity.

Hockey Week One
November 2015
Dartington have entered two squads into this years hockey league run by Dart hockey club. With a title to defend, the squads set up ready for the challenge ahead of them.
Dartington 'White'
The 'White' squad got off to a solid start in week one, taking a win, a draw and a defeat. First up was the gruelling challenge of playing Dartington Green and although they had the upper hand, their pressure could not tell as Dartington Green defended well with the final result ending 0v0.
South Brent A were the next opponents and traditionally they have been a strong school at this competition, having won it two years ago. Fielding many players from local clubs, they piled the pressure onto the 'White' squad but the team held strong and defended incredibly well. The odd strong attack from the squad offered a limited threat but the Brent pressure finally told as two solid goals resulted in a 2v0 defeat.
The final match of the week saw the squad up against a new Berry Pomeroy team and the previous game helped the squad to defend much more solidly. A flurry of attacks from the whites finally told as a cross ball from Felix allowed Harry to tap home from close range to give the squad a 1v0 win and their first of the league.
Well done to everyone in the squad:
Nini, Emily, Tallulah, Maddie, Felix, Harry, Cai, Oscar
Dartington 'Green'
The Green squad matched that of the White squad by securing a win, a draw and a defeat in week one. Dartington White were up first and the squad defended superbly including a superb last ditch tackle from Sophia resulting in a solid 0v0 draw.
Up next were Braodhempston A, another traditionally solid school at this league over the years. Unfortunately the squad from Broadhempston was just a little too strong as they possess many club players. The Greens succumbed to a 6v0 defeat but this defeat did not put them off in their last match as they also picked up the first win of the season in a closely fought battle against The Grove B securing a 1v0 win after a solid attack up front from Reuben, Ebony and Alex. The Green team managed to keep most of the play in the Groves half due to higher levels of determination and desire meaning Alex was able to flick the ball into the goal to win the game 1v0.

"Mrs McInally was a great coach for our dance training. She really inspired me to go even further in my learning. The dance training was so fun and she gave our group of Dance Leaders, a lot of ideas for our dance which we are performing in the Spring at a dance celebration held annually at KEVICC."
Margot
"In October the dance leaders went to the hall to start our Dance Leader training with Mrs McInally. It was really fun and useful. The other dance leaders were; Reuben, Maddie, Awen, Daniel, Freya, Margot and Emily. I am now really looking forward to being a proper dance leader."
Reuben
"The dance leader training was fantastic and I thought it showed our potential and talent, I love things like that. Thank you to Mrs McInally very much for giving up your time to help us."
Awen
"In October we went for a session of dance training with the dance teacher Miss. McInally. She taught us some different warm ups and we made our own sequence with a partner."
Freya
"In October Margot, Emily, Maddie, Awen, Reuben and Daniel all went to do dance leader training with Mrs. McInally. All of the dance leaders had lots of fun. We choreographed a dance then we combined our dances together."
Emily
"In October, seven dance leaders went down to the hall for dance leader training. Our teacher was called Mrs. McInally the BEST dance teacher ever!! Freya, Margot, Dan, Emily, Awen and Reuben were as excited as I was! I have always loved dance and I can’t wait to start my leadership role. We did a solo, a duet and a group dance along with more routines. I just can’t wait until dance club starts!"
Maddie
"In October in the afternoon a dance teacher from KEVICC called Mrs. McInally taught us some hip hop dances. At the end of the training me, Reuben and Awen celebrated our dance and mixed together our solos. The girls made up their own dances together . At the end we choose Reuben to be our dance captain."
Dan
Well done everyone, it seems like you had a fantastic time!

Boys Triumph at Partnership Event
October 2015
Tom (Yr5) and Daniel (Yr2) took part in the latest partnership event held at KEVICC. Both boys had to take part in a variety of events including Boccia, a game devised around the concept of accuracy, and badminton. Staff from the Dartmoor Sports Partnership ran the event superbly with excellent support from the KEVICC sports leaders. The Dartington children were really looked after well by the sports leaders and they were a credit to their school. For completing a wonderful morning of sport, both Tom and Daniel received a certificate and a free ball. Daniel summed up the event as simply 'awesome'. We are still awaiting Tom's comment.

Dartington A
Match report to follow
Squad:Max M, Max L, Henry, Harry, Nini, Felix, Finn
Dartington B carried on where the left off in September's win over Dartington A by remaining unbeaten during October's meet. The squad were boosted by Sam joining the team as Kitty was absent through illness. New boys Berry Pomeroy were Dartington's first opponents and the squad started very slowly being second to 50:50 balls and a lack of discipline in marking the Berry players. As the game grew, and with Berry not taking their chances, the squad's confidence grew and they started to play towards their capability, but it was too little too late as the game ended in a 0v0 draw. After re-grouping and having a discussion about tactical and positional play with drive to succeed, the squad were a different team in the second game against Totnes St Johns B. Some superb saves in goal by Reuben alongside some solid play in midfield allowed Crow to break free 10 yards from goal but his shot bounced agonisingly against the base of the post but the team did not stop there and their pressure told when Crow slid in a through ball to captain Cowen who shot low into the bottom right hand corner to win the game 1v0. Some excellent defending from Ben and Odin allowed for a clean sheet. Their last opponents this week were The Grove B and the squad took the confidence of winning their previous game into this last game from the very first minute. They dominated the game with two superb goals from Cowen and a single goal from Crow but it was Lola made a superb contribution up front by harrassing their defenders all game and not giving them any time to settle on the ball which allowed the chances for Crow and Cowen to be created. With a change in personnel for the last few minutes, it allowed The Grove striker to close in on goal but some superb tracking back from Sam allowed him to get a last ditch block in to deflect the shot wide of Reuben's left post. Week two resulted in two wins and a draw with no goal conceeded all afternoon. Well done to everyone

September 2015
On Tuesday 29th Setember Felix, Lola, Caspian, Reuben and Ben represented Dartington at a basketball event at KEVICC. This was the first time they had played basketball for Dartington and they showed great promise.
In their first match they took on Diptford B and despite some chances from both teams, the score line remained 0-0.
The competition really picked up in the next few games and Dartington lost 6-2 to Diptford C, 6-0 to Diptford A and by the same scoreline to Berry Pomeroy. The team regrouped, didn’t lose their enthusiasm and in game five it finally paid off. Great passing and careful shooting resulted in a 4-2 win against The Grove with Dartington proving themselves a future force to be reckoned with.
Staff at the event commented on their team spirit and caring attitude and they should be proud of their league result.
Thank you also to Mr Gillard and Miss Tucker for taking the children and providing this opportunity.

Silver Award Achieved
September 2015
Dartington Primary School have built on their successes of achieving the Bronze award last year by gaining a silver sports mark award which is the only national recognition for school sport.
The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Last year, we achieved a School Games Silver award and we will shortly receive a penant to proudly display alongside last years' bronze award just oustide of our school reception area. Please come along and have a look at it when it arrives!
Huge congratulations to the children for their hard work and commitment they have shown because without them we would not have the squads and teams to represent our school. In addition, we would like to hugely thank the parents for their continued support of the development of sport at Dartington and the staff who have given up many hours delivering sessions and coaching the children at these events in their own time.

Cross Country
September 2015
20 children represented the school at the first of many cross-country meetings throughout the year held at Stover School. Due to a couple of children pulling out at the last minute, there was just one respresenative in the 3/4 girls race, that being Pheobe. Phoebe did superbly well and the school very proud as she finished strong in the middle group of around 100 runners really setting the tone for the other runners. Next up was the 3/4 boys event. All of our boys doing a great job and a very close contest for the top position from our school with just 10 places separating the top 4 Dartington boys. Leo took top spot with brothers Henry and Max finishing second and third respectively.
Some very strong performances in years 5 and 6 resulted in very proud parents and staff as four children from Dartington ended up in the top 63 positions with Esme finishing 22nd and top Dartington year 5/6 girl with Lola hot on her tail finishing in 33rd. Calum in year 6 really raised the bar and saved the best finish till last as he played a very good race tactically to end up 5th best runner out of around 100 runners in the 5/6 boys race.
Well done to everyone who took part and contributed towards the team score, you were all superb!
Squad: Phoebe, Max, Henry, Ben, Leo, James, Sol, Sammie, Nell, Lola, Lily, Evie, Esme, Luna, Emily, Caitlin, Tallulah, Emily, Leo, Calum

Badminton
September 2015
Four children from Dartington Primary School attended a Badminton event for the first time on Monday 21st September held at Coombeshead Academy, Newton Abbot. Preparations were halted due to two power cuts that struck a large part of Newton Abbot but that did not faze the children as they were excited to get started in what is a new sport for most of them.
Dartington played against a strong Canada Hill B side first and found the going tough with each of their children losing their singles matches and therefore resulting in a 4v0 defeat. Although they also lost to Bradley Barton A by the same scoreline, all of the children improved so much as the morning went on and each child won at least one match with the other results being 1v3 against Wolborough B, two 2v2 draws against Chudleigh A and Canada Hill D and a well earnt victory against Chudleigh C eventually taking the game 3v1. The squad improved dramatically through the day and should be proud of their performances.
Well done everyone especially as for some of you, it was your first experience of Badminton.

CVL Football
September 2015
Dartington Primary School's new football squads met for the first time at KEVICC on Monday 21st September to take part in this year's central venue league. Both teams were very slow to start but gained in confidence and in tactical awareness during the day resulting in much improved play as they went through their sets of fixtures. Both of our teams are roughly even in ability with both boys and girls representing our school at football.
Dartington 'A' started the league campaign off against Totnes St Johns A, who were very strong last year. Ther team battled very hard but lost the game 5v0. With a better defence in the second game, Dartington held Broadhempston off to the very end but a late goal meant their second game ended with a 1v0 defeat. After playing their first team, Dartington were hoping for a more even game against Totnes St Johns B, and thats exactly what they got. A really even game with a fantastic battling performance but again a solitary goal from the opposition ended in the same scoreline 1v0. The Grove, now playing at their home ground at KEVICC, gave a really solid performance and beat our squad 2v0 which left the squad a little deflated. However, with the last game up against Dartington 'B', all was forgotten in a really good, fair and even display for their last match...full details of this match below.
Dartington 'B' started their campaign against Totnes St John B. It was a really slow start from Dartington with a lack of discipline in their positional play but they held firm for a 0v0 draw. Second up was an unknown quantity in Diptford. Dartington started quite strong with some superb play in midfield but again a lack of concentration in defence resulted in the Diptford forward not being marked in front of goal which lead to the only goal of the game as the team lost 1v0. The Grove were the next opponents and the first time the two teams met since last years semi final penalty shoot out. The Grove were seeking revenge of the defeat last year and scored two quick goals in succession. Looking for a positive response, the squad were rotated to a more attacking formation and got their deserved goal with a fine strike from Crow to make it 2v1. Unfortunately the team could not get back on level of terms and lost 2v1. St Johns A were next up and Dartington showed a superb defensive display. St Johns battled hard and it took a shot that Reuben, between the sticks for Dartington, saved onto the underside of the crossbar which ricocheted onto the base of the post and bounced back into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper. The referee stopped the game and looked at the post and gave the goal. Unfortunately goal line technology has not yet been rolled out at the KEVICC central venue league and should we be subject to such technological advances in the future may give a definitive answer of whether the ball crossed the line or not. The team lost the game 1v0 but gained a lot of confidence going into the last game against Dartington A.
Dartington A started the stronger of the two teams and showed some positive attacking play but could not get the all important goal when on top with a shot just nipping past the post. Dartington B grew in confidence as the game went on and a break down the left wing from Cohen saw him bare down on goal and he slotted home the only goal of the game to give the bragging rights to Dartington B. A solid first week for both teams but both teams will develop further as the league continues.
Dartington A: Max M, Max L, Henry, Harry, Felix, Finn, Nini
Dartington B: Cohen, Reuben, Odin, Crow, Ben, Lola, Kitty

Sport Eye Published
July 2015
The latest version of the school sport magazine, Sport Eye, has been published today. If you require further copies, you can download it from our Sport Eye and Letters tab above. The sport and dance leaders have put so much time into writing the articles as we have done so many events during the long Summer term. Well done to the children for writing and creating such a brilliant magazine!
Swimming Gala
July 2015
On 17th July 2015, the children of Dartington Primary School took part in the best swimming gala ever!
It started at half past nine with Mrs Fraser’s class followed by all of the other key stage 2 classes. It was a lovely sunny day with a very well organised schedule which meant it flowed perfectly. All of the classes took part in front crawl, breast stroke and back stroke races as well as a width race. All of the children that took part really enjoyed the morning of swimming. Miss Doe then worked out the winners for the Swimming gala which was Silver Birch this year! Well done to Mrs Wallis and her children!

Sports Day
June 2015
On Monday 22nd June, Dartington Primary School Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children had their yearly Sports Day near the end of the year held on Meadowbrook field. The Key Stage 2 children had to take part in different events including sprint races, distance races and relay races. There were also some novelty races for children to take part in such as the sack race, bean bag race and the obstacle race. Finally children from Key Stage 2 had some field events which were long jump, throwing at a target and an obstacle race. Everyone had a great time and cannot wait until next year!
The Key Stage 1 Sports Day was similar to Key Stage 2 Sports Day, but this event was a lot smaller because there are only three classes in Key Stage 1. Luckily the year 6 Dance Leaders and Sports Leaders helped out with the running of the event so that it was able to run more smoothly through the day.
The winner of this years’ Sports Day is Beech which is Miss Doe’s Forest Family. They have won Sports Day for the first time in many years and are very proud of winning the title this year.
In addition to Sports Day, Foundation had their Sports Day on the following Tuesday which took place on the field next to our hall. The children had to do sprint races, obstacle races and inflatable egg and spoon races. At the end of Sports Day the children also had to run around the field twice. Unlike the main Sports Day, there were not any winners as it was all about taking part and enjoyment.
The staff and the children at the school would like to thank Dartington Village Stores for their kind donations of snacks for Key Stage 1 once again. It is very kind of them to support Sports Day.
Also, without the hard work of Mr Salem and his team before Sports Day, it would not be possible to run the great event because they spend hours marking out the field so that we can use it on the day.
All of the children did amazingly well on the day and enjoyed such a great Sports Day. Here are some quotes from children on the day.
"I had a great time and wish I could do it all again, it didn't matter if you didn't win anything as it was all about taking part." Molly (Year 6)
“I wish I could participate in next years Sports Day." Matilda (Year 6)
"I really enjoyed Sports Day and the weather was great! I love a bit of competition." Caitlin (Year 4)
“I loved it all, especially the obstacle race and the egg and spoon race.” Evie

Devon Summer Games (County Finals)
June 2015
Dartington Primary School took 39 children down to Plymouth for the annual Devon Summer Games. The children were crowned partnership champions in years 5 and 6 and therefore qualified to represent our area. The year 3/4 squad also qualified for this event.
All the children were excited and headed down to Plymouth on a huge coach. They went to Plymouth Albion rugby club for an opening ceremony. There were over a thousand children at this event. Olympic silver medallist in rowing, Annie Vernon, opened the games with an oath. There was also a mascot race too between the five different mascots, and Elmo won. After the opening ceremony all of the children went to the life centre which is where Tom Daley trains. The facilities at the life centre are amazing compared to our local facilities. The golfers then made their way to the middle of Central Park where they were given the rules of the competition.
The year 3/4 did a tri golf event where they took part in lots of different activities such as chipping a golf ball into a box made of cones, chipping a golf ball onto a target board, dominoes which is when you hit a cone and take it away and many, many more events. The children all said it was a really fun day and said they wanted to do more. Some of the children showed great talent and thought golf was a brilliant opportunity for them all. They also came home with a Dartmoor t-shirt which was worn to represent Dartington’s area. Dartington A came 12th and Dartington B came 15th in the County. Considering some of the children had never played golf before, they all did exceptionally well.
The Super six golfers (years 5/6) qualified as partnership champions after beating other schools from our area. They went to the Summer Games which is a much higher competition against schools from all over Devon. Super six golf is just like normal golf, just on a smaller scale. The super 6 squad all did their very best and had a great time. They did so well they finished an impressive 5th position narrowly missing out on bronze medals by a couple of shots. They should be proud to be the 5th best team in the whole County, well done!

3/4 Totnes Learning Community Athletics Finals
June 2015
Dartington sent two squads of children from years 3 and 4 to KEVICC for the Totnes Learning Community Athletics finals. They took part in long distance races, sprint relays, throwing activities and jumping activities. The children all used their skills they have learnt in their PE lessons to try and earn their team the best score as possible. With the top two schools qualifying for the Partnership finals, there was a goal to work towards. Both teams worked really hard to try to secure one of the places but unfortunately both sqauds just missed out on these places but took certificates back to school for demonstrating positive participation. Well done to everyone who took part, you all did fantastically well.
Squads:
Dartington A: Toby, Zac, Finn, Felix, Emily, Maya, Luna, Ebony
Dartington B: Henry, Max, Ben, Harry, Iona, Ella, Esme, Tallulah

Dart take home the Championship title
June 2015
The two squads took to KEVICC for the final time this year for the CVL football finals. Dartington A, who only played 29 games across the whole season compared to many teams 37 games finished the league in a respectable 4th position out of 10 schools and therefore qualified for the 'Premiership' event. They played South Brent in the semi finals who topped the league by winning 28 of their 37 league games. The squad knew they were right up against it but were certainly up for the challenge. They battled and worked so hard for each other with solid defending throughout the game. South Brent could not break down the squad as neither side found enough to score with the end result being 0v0. This in itself is a huge result!! The game went to extra time and with just a minute left on the clock before penalties, South Brent broke the deadlock with a golden goal. Although the team were disappointed not to go further in the comeptition, they should be very proud of this performance. The squad then played their 3rd/4th place playoff against the other semi final losers in St Johns A. Although Dartington had some chances to take the game, it was St Johns that scored the all important goal as they took the playoff 1v0. This means the A squad finished a very respectable 4th position in the first year we have attended this league, something each one of the squad should be very proud of. Well done boys.
Dartington B, who were formed half way through the season only played nine games and qualified for the 'Championship'. Six teams formed this part of the league finals and the first match was the all important game. The squad knew a win in the first game would give them a chance of bringing home silverware and that is exactly what they did in a gruelling first game against The Grove A. 0v0 after normal time resulted in extra time being played. Dart hit the crossbar half way through extra time and they battled for that all important golden goal but it would not come so penalties had to decide the winner. Lochie, Oscar and Callum all stepped up to take a penalty each but The Grove A goalkeeper made some exceptional saves diving to his right to keep out Callum and Oscar but Lochie did score his penalty with a well taken strike into the bottom right hand corner. Oisin was also in fine form as he too kept out two of the three Grove penalties. Sudden death meant children from both teams needed nerves of steel and it was George, who with a little persuasion, stepped up to take a wonderful penalty into the bottom right hand corner leaving the superb Grove keeper stranded. The pressure was on the Grove to score and keeper Oisin made the all important save to send the Dart boys into rapture as they progress to the final group stage and a chance to take home the trophy. Up first was Broadhempston and although both teams had chances, neither team could score meaning the first group game ended 0v0. The Grove B were Dartington's next opponents and two late goals scored by Lochie resulted in a strong 2v0 win. The squad then had to wait and watch the final game between Broadhempston and The Grove B. Knowing that anything less than a 2v0 win for Broadhempston would result in the squad topping the Championship, they were watching in anticipation as both teams battled hard. The final minutes of the match came and went without any score resulting in Dartington topping the Championship with 4 points. All of the boys did incredibly well and should be proud of the silverware they earnt. Well done boys

Champions Dartington Qualify For County Finals
June 2015
Dartington took two squads to the year 5/6 Super 6 Golf event held at Dainton Golf Club. Many of our children have never picked up a club before let alone played the sport of Golf but we are trying to provide as many new sports as we can at Dartington for the children to try. You never know, we may identify the next Rory McIlroy...
The two squads of six played in pairs with other children from other schools. They played nine holes of Golf including real golfing features such as bunkers! They took it in turns to use the 'driver' club to get the ball closer to the hole - although the children did at first refer to this club as a stick! Once on the green they used the putter to send the ball home.
All of the children did amazing well and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon at Dainton. Dangerous Dartington scored 161 with the best round recorded by William and Hadley with a score of 52. Erin and Louie scored 56 with Emily and Maddie finishing on 53. The team finished an impressive 7th in the partnership finals. Dartington Dynamoes did incredibly well with the best round of the team scored by Halo and Lochie with a remarkable round of 36. Close on their tales were Callum and Ralphie on 37 with Tallulah and Jess recording an impressive 42 totalling a superb 115 shots in total. This resulted in the Dartington Dynamoes being crowned as Partnership champions and will represent the Dartmoor SSP at the Devon Summer Games where around 1000 young people from across the county will be performing! This is such an achievement, we are so proud of you all.
Well done to everyone from both squads, you all did amazingly well.

3/4 Tri-Golf CANCELLED
June 2015
The year 3/4 Tri-Golf event to be held at Dainton Golf Club has unfortunately been cancelled due to the thundery and wet weather forecasted for tomorrow. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but we do hope that a similar event will be available for us to enter for these same children. A letter will be sent home if this opportunity arises.
QuadKids Athletics
June 2015
On Monday 8th June, eight children from Dartington Primary School took part in an athletics event against many other schools from within our partnership. The squad started with a gruelling 600m in hot conditions and they all ran a superb race, especially Yarner who won her girls heat with ease. The standing broad jump was the next event where the Dartington children had to perform their longest two footed jump with mixed success. Using a nerf ball, the children then had to throw as far as they could and the day was rounded off with a 75m sprint at the end. Every child earned points for the squad and performed to their very best despite the hot weather.
Dartington finished 9th out of 11 schools but more importantly the squad gained a 'spirit of the games' award. This is an award which is voted on by children from the other schools and they have to award the school they think did the best at performing in the right spirit. Some of the values included honesty and fair play. We are incredibly proud of their athletic efforts as well as being recognised and voted as the best school with the correct spirit. Well done everyone!

Hockey
June 2015
After the success of the hockey squads this year with silverware achieved at the Dart Hockey event in December as well as only being knocked out at the semi final stage of the partnership finals by private school, Stover 1v0, the squad was entered into a huge event held at Plymouth Marjons where around 50 teams from the Plymouth and wider area participated.
First up in our Pool was Horrabridge B, who are traditionally a very good hockey school. After slipping behind to a slow start, it wasn't long before the squad started to gain confidence and play the ball around better. Half way into the match, Callum set up Millie to slot home Dartington's first goal of the event to draw level at 1v1. It wasn't long before Callum was in another position to set up Ralphie for the squad to take the lead 2v1. As the hooter sounded, Horrabridge managed to scramble the ball over the line to make it 2v2 with the final touch of the game. A solid start and a good platform to push on. In their second match, Dartington were paired up against Eggbuckland and romped home to a 4v0 win with goals from Ralphie, Millie, Leo and Lochie. With confidence from the previous game high, the squad put in another strong performance against Hyde Park C as they matched the previous scoreline of 4v0 with goals from Callum, Leo and two from Ralphie.
Tregadillet, who were last years Plate champions in this event probably gave us our best game of the day. The match was played in superb spirit and was a real advert for hockey. Dartington went 1v0 down early in the game to a very skillfull boy up front but this did not knock their confidence as some excellent play on the wing from Robin allowed the ball to break free to Callum who slotted home from the top of the D as he smashed it into the bottom right corner. Tregadillet came back strong and regained the lead but it wasn't long before Callum slotted home again to draw the sides level at 2v2. With plenty of game time ahead of us, Callum was withdrawn to rest and his replacement Ralphie did a superb job in the middle of the park. However Tregadillet's strong forward had the last laugh as he scored in the last minute to take the match 3v2. A superb match of end to end hockey!
The team responded well to their first defeat of the day as they won their next match against Yealmpstone Farm 2v1. Superbly taken goals from Lola and Yarner allowed them to take a 2v0 lead. A last minute consolation halved the lead but Dartington took the game 2v1. Up last in the group stage was Cornwood and the squad rested themselves in preparation for the knock out stage which was to follow. Dartington lost the game 2v0 but they were in the knowledge that they had qualified for the top competition for the best sixteen teams that enetered. A superb effort considering that this is the first time Dartington had entered the event.
Traditionally, the top competition is littered with private schools and it was state school, Hyde Park A who Dartington met in the knock out stages. The squad played absolutely superbly and had a number of chances to take the lead but twice Hyde Park A cleared it off the line. Their team which comprises of many Plymouth Marjon players (one of the top teams in the Country) finally broke through the Dartington defence to take an undeserved lead with two minutes remaining. The squad piled on the pressure in a last ditch attempt to draw level but just missed out. The squad played so well in this match against clearly one of the best teams in the whole competition as Hyde Park eventually lost in the semi-final. Every single player should be immensely proud of their efforts, they were superb all day long and did so well. To be in the top sixteen teams locally from East Cornwall to as far north as Dartington is a great achievement. Superb everyone, a great day of hockey!

Mini Tennis Red
June 2015
Dartington Primary School entered three teams into the summers' Mini Tennis event held at South Dartmoor on Thursday 4th June. The children have all attended the schools' tennis club where they have been practicing their ground strokes and gaining the knowledge of how the game works. This was the first opportunity for our children to play tennis against children from other schools and they all did a fantastic job as well as really enjoying themselves.
The 'A' and 'C' team were drawn against each other in Pool A, whereas the 'B' team were placed in Pool B. Each squad played five games in their respective pools with varying results which can be found in our results section of the website. Each players gained numerous points for their squad and helped Dartington to achieve some respectable Pool positions. In Pool A, Dartington C finished in third place with Dartington A closely on their heels in fourth position out of six teams. Dartington B finally ranked third in their Pool, again of six teams.
It was great to see some new faces representing our school at a sports event, every single player did the school very proud. Well done everyone!

Rounders
May 2015
The Rounders
event took place on Thursday 21st May at South Dartmoor Community
College.
During our
group games we beat Bovey Tracey B, lost to Decoy and won against All Saints
Marsh. We finished 2nd in our
group so we played all the other teams that finished 2nd in their
groups. We beat Chudleigh and lost to
Ilsington.
Everyone was
so proud of how we all worked together to get to 5th place out of all
12 schools. We all did remarkably considering most of us hadn’t trained and it
was the first time some of the team played Rounders altogether.
The squad
members were Yarner, Jessica, Miki, Clem, Lochie, Ruby, Lola, George, Rowen, Callum,
Alex and Leo.
The overall winners who qualify for the Devon Summer Games were Decoy.
We all enjoyed this event and would like to go and do this again next year.

Beach Cricket
May 2015
The week’s weather wasn’t
conducive to a sports event on the beach but it kindly turned for the children
on the afternoon of Wednesday 20th May. It was the first time that the school had
entered the festival and the children thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon of
Cricket.
32 children from across the partnership, including 8 from Dartington, experienced a variety of cricket related skills. These skills included relay races using a bat and ball, hitting and striking skills coupled with fielding skills and throwing activities looking to hit stumps in a competitive environment. However, the children’s favourite event was a catching activity called King/Queen of the toilet which they enjoyed immensely, in what for some of the children, was their first experience of cricket.
The children behaved superbly all afternoon and you never know their love for cricket may grow even further after their first taste of it. Well done everyone!

CVL Football
May 2015
Dartington Green
Squad: Oisin, Crow, Lee, Finn, Cowen, Ezra, Max
The Dartington Green squad started their afternoon off with a clash against table toppers South Brent. The team held firm and played some fantastic football at times but the quality of the opposition finally told with two late goals ending in a 2v0 defeat. Apart from the result, it was an encouraging start and some of the best football the squad have produced this year and it continued into their second match against rivals; Broadhempston. A super strike from Finn and a clean sheet from Oisin was enough to take home the three points. The squad's third game was against The Grove B. A dip in concentration saw the team fall behind but good support play up front from Max and Cowen enabled captain Ezra to poke home for a deserved equaliser; the final score being 1v1. Their penultimate match of the day saw them up against their peers against the Dark Green team, details below of such an enthralling game. The final match was against a strong Landscove side and the pace of the previous game against Dartington Dark Green sapped the energy out of the lads. Despite the best defensive efforts from Crow and Lee, the squad lost their final game to a solitary goal 0v1.
Dartington Dark Green
Squad: Lochie, George, Rowan, Callum, Oscar, Joe
This was just the second league meeting for the Dark Green squad and had just six players available due to illnesses. Up first was The Grove A and super play from Oscar resulted in the first goal. He charged down the goalkeeper, giving him no time and the keepers' clearance ricocheted off Oscar and into the net, 1v0! The Grove replied with a superb strike 20 yards out that looped over Lochie and into the goal without bouncing. A fantastic strike but something the lads did not deserve. The game ended 1v1. The Grove B were the squads next opponents and they were pipped up for it after the last game. Great attacking play down both flanks ended with Callum being set up for two strikes at goal which he took to win the game 2v0. Top of the table South Brent were the next opponents. The squad defended resolutely with superb saves from Lochie and last ditch defending from George and Rowan to keep Brent at bay but again another super strike from their centre forward in off both posts that nobody could do anything about. Great hold up play from Joe up front set up Callum for a final chance but his shot was well saved. End result 0v1. Dartington Green were the next opponents, match report below. Their final game of the day was up against Broadhempston. The squad were so tired after playing with a man short for the whole afternoon so the squad rotated giving the relative fresh legs of Lochie in goal a rare appearance outfield putting Oscar in goal. This decision was crucial in allowing the squad to compete and it was rewarded as Lochie poked in the winner from an excellent defence splitting ball from Callum to make the final result 1v0.
Dartington Green v Dartington Dark Green
The much awaited game was over as the two squads from Dartington met for the first time. The original squad up against the newer squad with just 6 players. The Green's started the much better of the two teams putting plenty of pressure on the Dark Green players when in possession. This pressure told as Lee slotted home from close range to put the Green's 1v0 up. There were other chances for the Greens' but the Dark Green defence stood firm. Slowly the Dark Green team grew in confidence in the game and a long range speculative shot from Callum found the back of the net to make it honours even; 1v1. Tables had turned and it was the Dark Green team who had the better of possession and a shot at goal was handled by Crow inside the area. The stand in referee for the day, Mr Lyndon, a teacher from KEVICC awarded the spot kick to the Dark Green's. Callum stepped up to take the penalty but a brilliant double save from oisin kept the score even as the ball went out for a corner. The Green squad's concentration slipped as they congratulated Oisin for his brilliant saves. In celebration, the Dark Green squad took their corner quickly with the ball ending up at the feet of Callum who struck home from 8 yards out to allow the Dark Green team to take the lead for the first time. With just a minute on the clock, the Green team restarted and played some lovely one touch football around the back looking to create that final chance to draw level and it finally arrived as Finn received a superb through ball and slotted the ball cooly between Lochie's legs in goal to send the Green team into euphoria as they scored with seconds remaining to level the game 2v2. A brilliant game played in the right spirit!!!
A superb afternoon of football by everyone with some superb performances. Well done everyone!

Ball Kids Triumph at UK's Biggest Event
April 2015
GB
PRO-SERIES BARNSTAPLE
Seven children from Dartington Primary School have been in training since October to be ball boys and girls for the annual professional tennis tournament in Barnstaple which was held over the Easter holidays. The annual event is the UK’s biggest indoor tournament for women’s tennis and has previously attracted top British players in Heather Watson and Laura Robson.
In addition to the training received at Dartington Primary, the children also went for trials and further extensive training in Barnstaple prior to the event. Subsequently, all seven of Dartington’s children were selected to be ball boys and girls and every one of them participated in both the semi-finals and finals of the tournament.
The children were allowed to relax after the final ball was hit and even managed to get the autographs of the top players including the winner of the singles final; Kristyna Pliskova, who has a world ranking of 126. They were even lucky enough to have their photo taken with her too.
As staff, we are immensely proud of every single child that represented the school. The children have shown such great commitment to the club over the year and have thoroughly deserved their place at Barnstaple. They have done such an amazing job! You never know, you may even see one or two of them being a ball boy or girl on a TV screen soon!
We are still awaiting official photography from the event and as soon as we receive this, it will go live right here on our site. In the meantime, the official video from the Tarka Tennis Centre, Barnstaple is available by clicking the link below...Can you spot all seven of our children?

Paralympic Success
March 2015
On Wednesday 18th March 2015, two children from Dartington Primary School attended a paralympic sports event against other children from across the whole sports partnership held at Teign School, Newton Abbot. The children developed their skills in Badminton, sitting Volleyball and Boccia. Cameron in year 6 stated "I really enjoyed sit down
volleyball and rolling balls into hoops. Best of all was badminton! The Paralympic Day was
the best sports day I have ever been too. I am really proud of myself and so are the staff at Teign School". In addition, Tom in year 4 mentioned that "The sitting Volleyball was the best adventure of my life". The children even had some goodies to take home in the form of a water bottle, wrist band and a certificate. A super day was to be had by all.
CVL Football Dartington Dark Green
March 2015
On Monday 9th
March, Dartington Dark green played in the CVL Football league on the KEVICC
AstroTurf. The conditions were challenging; miserable, wet and cold. We
had four matches ahead of us and everything to play for.
The squads’ first match saw them up against Stoke Gabriel where Callum scored the first goal which was closely followed by Oscar scoring a second. Dartington winning their first game 2v0! During the second round, Dartington Dark Green played Broadhempston, and whilst it was a close match, they beat us 1v0 with a late goal. The third round saw the squad up against The Grove ‘A’ and they managed to get a hard earned draw - with Callum scoring to keep the Dark Greens in the game. In the fourth and final round, they played against The Grove ‘B’. The squad came home with all three points with Callum scoring two more brilliant goals and Lochie scoring with a confident chip over the top of the goalies head to win 3v0! Rowan and George played brilliantly in defence all afternoon, defending all attacks making Oisin's job in goal easier as it was a real team effort. Great goal keeping Oisin! Oscar and Joe out wide showed strong team commitment working together to get the job done with Joe making super tackles and Oscar making good attacking runs. Callum’s goals demonstrated the determination and skill he has on the pitch. Well done everyone, a great team effort.
By Lochie Poore
Well done Lochie, a great team report of the Dark Greens’ first set of fixtures. A very modest description of your goal! I have to say it is one of the best I have seen at a Primary Football event. The coach from the other school said the same thing! Well done to the whole squad, it really was a great team effort, again doing the school very proud. The Dartington Green team’s report will be in the newsletter shortly. Keep your eyes peeled.

Cross Country - Stover
March 2015
On Wednesday 4th
March, around thirty Year 3-6 eager runners from Dartington Primary School took
part in the muddiest, but breath taking and most exciting cross-country event
held at Stover School, just outside Newton Abbot. When the year 3/4 girls started the first
race, they did not know what to expect. At the starting line, the girls were
feeling nervous and worried but these emotions soon changed to excitement when
the race started. In the middle of the
race, many of them had stitches, but they kept going. On the way, people kept cheering everyone on
to give them a positive attitude to keep going.
When everyone finished, they felt proud of themselves even though we
didn’t win the races. Everyone tried
their best and that is what counts, so well done to all of the runners! Also there were yummy refreshments, even Mr
Smith gave us Jelly Babies for energy at the start. Everyone loved their afternoon at Stover
School and cannot wait until the next event.
By Emily, Evie Lily F and Phoebe.
All of the children that took part really did the School proud. We had some great success with the top child in each category being Yarner coming 7th out of around 77 children in the 5/6G category and Calum V finishing 8th out of around 96 boys in the 5/6B category. In the 3/4 races, Esme ended up 15th out of around 90 girls in the 3/4G category with Riz Ravenhill coming in at 23rd out of around 112 boys in the 3/4B race. As staff, we were proud of the children that did so well but also we were equally proud of the great attitude shown by all of the runners to finish the event showing fantastic perseverance throughout the course as well as trying to over take the person in front during sprint finishes! Well done to everyone who took part, we hope you sign up again for the next race! You did yourselves and the school proud!!!

Hockey Partnership Finals
February 2015
Dartington took two teams to the partnership hockey finals on
9th February at Ashburton looking to develop further on the recent
success at the Dart Hockey league. The ‘A’ team sporting the schools new
competitive kit started slowly in their first game against private school
Trinity from Teignmouth eventually going down 2v0 to two very scrappy goals
that Dartington failed to defend on a very bouncy pitch. Back to back games didn’t allow much time to
discuss team tactics for the second game against a well-known local side, The
Grove A . Again, a slow start and a
scrappy goal resulted in Dartington 1v0 down within seconds of the match
starting. The squad, however, grew into the game with two fine goals from
Callum but The Grove A got their deserved equaliser with just two minutes
remaining to end the game 2v2. Knowing
the scores from the other games, Dartington knew they had to win the last group
game against Broadhempston B by a scoreline of 4v0 or better. This ultimatum of ‘4v0 or you are out’ was
enough to see a much improved performance against a battling Broadhempston with
just five players. Dartington eventually
won the game 6v0 with some fine play from Callum and Leo with the goals with
excellent tackling on the wings from Maddie and Millie. This set up a semi-final place against an
excellent Stover School. The squad
arguably played their best game of the tournament with excellent play up front
from Amber and some super defending from Lochie in defence but Stover scored
the all important goal to take the win 1v0. Callum had a fierce shot deflected
with seconds remaining but to go out to a private school in the semi finals is
no mean feat. The two private schools,
Trinity and Stover qualify to represent the partnership at the county finals.
The ‘B’ team were competing in the friendly competition hoping to continue their success of winning the recent plate competition. Buckfastleigh unfortunately could not raise a team which left Dartington playing the other two teams in the group twice. Dartington’s first opponents were Chudleigh Primary School. A battling defensive performance of strong tackling wasn’t enough to keep Chudleigh out as the squad went down to the solitary goal 1v0. Not bad as Dartington had to start with five players due to Erin turning up at the wrong school! Their next two games were against Canada Hill ‘A’, who have been past champions of the cup competition within the Dart Hockey league. Up against formidable opponents did not put the squad off, as another fantastic defensive display from Reuben and Kian was enough to earn the Dartington a 0v0 draw. Unfortunately the squad could not keep out Canada Hill ‘A’ in their second game against them as they finally lost 2v0. Erin joined up with the squad and Dartington ‘B’s last league game was against Chudleigh again. This time with a full quota of players, they put up a real fight with good play from Lola and strong tackling from Ziggy but a scrappy goal was enough to win it for Chudleigh. Dartington came third in their group and played against the third placed team from group A, Canada Hill B, in the 5th/6th place final. There was a lot of hope that Dartington could end the day positively after their earlier draw with Canada Hill ‘A’ and that optimism paid off as the team scored their first goals of the event with two wonderful strikes from Felix to take 5th place with a well-earned 2v0 win.
Well done everyone for their hard efforts!

A Big Tennis Thank You
December 2014 (February 2015)
"Thank you very much for your thank you video that you created with your class teacher. It is great to see you use the balls we supplied and putting them to such good use in your training as ball boys and ball girls. Mr Smith informs us that you have trials at the GB Pro-Series in Barnstaple! This is fantastic news and we wish you the very best of luck. If selected, we hope you enjoy the womens tennis in Barnstaple, and you never know we may even see you as young umpires and line judges one day!" Kath and Ray Lovell
Our Year 5 and 6 Tennis Ball Persons Club has been in receipt of a very kind donation. Ray and Kath Lovell, referees of large tennis tournaments, as well as tennis officials themselves (including many Wimbledon finals between them), have kindly donated the used tennis balls from the latest tournament they refereed: The Nottingham Indoor Wheelchair Tennis Tournament. This tournament is one of the biggest Wheelchair events in the Country and attracts some of the worlds best players, with world rankings inside the top 10. Without their very kind donation, it would be extremely hard to run our Tennis Ball Persons Club where our children are being trained to become ball boys and ball girls with the hope that they can fulfill this role at local tennis events. At our most recent training session, the children made a Thank You video as well as showing off some of their newly learnt skills. Unfortunately, due to illness, some of the children were away but would still like to send their thanks. The full team is Callum, Erin, George, Leon, Lochie, Paddy, Robin, Rowan, Ruby, Yarner and Ziggy. Well done everyone, a super video!

Sports Hall Athletics
February 2015
A Year 5 group comprising mainly of our Gifted and Talented children attended a Sports Hall Athletics meeting on February 3rd at Seale Hayne. The children took part in many track and field events including a chest push, standing broad jump, triple jump, javelin, speed bounce, relay, an obstacle race and Paarlauf which is a relay event where the children had to run differing distances but the baton had to complete a certain distance. Out of the ten schools that entered the event (which was open to all schools in the whole partnership), Dartington came 9th.
The order was: Blackpool, Rydon, Bradley Barton, Bovey Tracey, Chudleigh, Buckfastleigh, Decoy, Canada Hill, Dartington, All Saints. By finishing in the top two, Blackpool and Rydon have qualified for the County finals at the Life Centre in Plymouth at the end of the month.
The children had a fantastic day out with Sophie commenting that "This was an amazing experience and I was glad to be a part of it. The atmosphere was electric - with lots of cheering and clapping." and Miki mentioned that "All children had fun competing and we hope to get a spot next year so our new gifted and talented children get a chance to shine."
Well done everyone, you all did your very best. You did the school very proud!

Football CVL January Meeting
January 2015
The football squad met again towards the end of January for their latest tournament in the schools brand new competitive kit, kindly donated by the PTFA. Due to the success of the previous tournaments, Dartington were placed against the other top schools to make the fixtures as competitive as possible. First up was The Grove A. A battling performance with very few opportunities to score for either side saw Dartington gain a point in a 0v0 draw. St Johns A was the squads next opponents. Although the team worked hard, poor positional play and forgetting some of the basic principles that they have worked so hard at over the last few tournaments resulted in a very disappointing 3v0 defeat. The squad then reacted very well to the team talk against arguably the strongest team in the event; South Brent. Losing a goal early on to a fantastic strike didn't knock Dartington's confidence as they showed really good battling qualities for the rest of the game. Having missed a golden chance to equalise, South Brent doubled their advantage with seconds remaining to take the match 2v0. The last game of the meeting saw Dartington up against Landscove. Goal of the year so far was scored by Lee as he set off a wonderful mazy run from inside his own half, took it past three defenders and to shoot past the goalkeeper to put Dartington 1v0 up. Unfortunately the squad cold not hold on for the win as defensive mistakes cost the team as Landscove scored twice in the last two minutes to take the game 2v1. One draw and three defeats against very hard opposition...Lets see if the squad can improve in their next meeting.

Dartington Claim Hockey Title
January 2015
The children have excelled at the school hockey league once
again and surpassed last year’s amazing achievement of runners up. Both teams
knew that there was a chance of silverware going into the final round of
fixtures on Monday evening at KEVICC and only hard work and determination for
the common goal would allow them to achieve this. Both squads worked tirelessly
for each other in some very difficult fixtures, but came out on top to achieve
success. The ‘A’ team drew 0-0 to a superb Ipplepen team; most of whom have
played hockey at Dart Hockey Club for the past few years. This draw resulted in
the only game Ipplepen did not win and did not score in. This great achievement
allowed Dartington to match last year’s squad by finishing runners up to an
excellent Ipplepen side. The ‘B’ team, playing in the plate competition, knew that a result against South Brent B
in their first fixture would guarantee them silverware and that they did edging
a very even game 2-1. The plate competition is in its first year of existence
and it’s fantastic to have Dartington’s name on it at the first time of asking.
A lot of our players were new to hockey at the start of the year and literally only picked up a hockey stick for the first time back in September. Considering some of the teams they were playing, both squads have amazed us with their teamwork, coupled with individual flair. It has been a real joy to see our children develop as young hockey players over a five week league and they have made us all incredibly proud to be part of the Dartington school community. Well done to every single player that has played for either of the squads, and we hope you all decide to continue playing hockey in the future.
A Team Report
This week Dartington ‘A’ went into the week knowing that it was the last hockey day in the tournament, but without the vital striker Amber and the solid defender Reuben, they knew it would be tough. Luckily, that didn’t show when they faced a strong, unbeaten Ipplepen A side. Due to the solid defending from Leon and Lochie, and some key attacking from Ziggy they forced an amazing 0-0 draw. The second and final match Dartington ‘A’ played a not-so-good Grove A team. They cruised past the Grove 2-1, but that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for superb mid-fielding from Callum, Robin and Maddie, and two excellent goals from Leo. Finally the awards, and because we played phenomenally we got a silver medal for coming runners up in the cup competition.

B Team Report
As the last week of the hockey league approached, Dartington B were feeling nervous but determined to win! Their first was game against a strong South Brent B side and the only team that could potentially beat Dartington to the title. Dartington defended well but South Brent were hot on their heels and scored a goal meaning they went 1-0 up. However with a great run along the wing from Ralphie and a quick pass into the D, Erin deflected the pass off her stick and into the goal making it 1-1. A great first goal of the league for Erin! South Brent continued to put up a fight but a free pass by Felix to Kian and a direct pass back to Ralphie meant that Ralphie out skilled the defenders and scored with little time left on the clock meaning Dartington won this vital match 2-1. The second match against the Grove B proved to be a little easier ending with a 3-0 win. Kian was in fine form during this match scoring all three goals! Ed and Riz were in midfield defending and trying to set up goals with amazing passes that cut the defence open. Meanwhile, in defence, Finn and Felix were holding a strong defence for the team, not giving The Grove players any free time. Even though we were missing Millie, Lola and Illias due to illness and a broken foot, Dartington B managed to storm through their last match winning 3-0. This meant that Dartington B went through the plate competition winning all four games and eventually winning the title. An amazing performance by the whole team and the medals and plate were well deserved! Well done to the whole ‘B’ team squad!

Football CVL December Meeting
January 2015
On Wednesday 10th December, Dartington Primary
stepped onto the pitch for the final games of the calendar year. The first
match was against The Grove B team. Although we had beaten them previously in
the tournament, that didn’t let our guard down. As Leo hit two close shots and
Lee scored a magnificent goal almost effortlessly! After that we were against South
Brent (the strongest team in the tournament). We had lost against them in a
friendly and we didn’t want it to happen again but with super defending from
Oisin and Joe they managed to slip past us and score two. Then there was
Broadhempston. We were annoyed about the previous loss but Leo, Ezra and Crow
went in for tackles, clearances and opportunities but despite the effort that
Max and Cowen gave they also scored two. The next match was against St Johns A
team and they had us scrambling around finally losing 2:0 for the third time in
a row. St John’s B were our next opponents and we must have had luck on our
side as Ezra scored stopping the defeats with a 1:0 win. Cowen scored against
The Grove A in our final match to earn a 1:1 draw.

In hockey this week, Dartington A knew that they had their first set of games in the cup so they were determined to get some points on the board without some key players in Lochie and Maddie due to illness. In the first game against an improved South Brent A, there was superb attacking play from Amber and Robin with three excellent goals from Leo. The final score was 3-1 to Dartington A. The next match was tricky against a solid Broadhempston A side which the squad lost to in qualifying. However, both teams played superb hockey and Dartington A came away with a narrow 1-1 draw. In the match there was lots of phenomenal man marking defending from Leon and Reuben helping the team to draw. The final opponents of the week were Landscove, (bearing in mind, Dartington A only won 3-2 against them last time) the players put in a great performance and came out with a 3-0 win. This was an excellent result and without brilliant midfield work from Callum, Ziggy and Leo, it could have been closer. Goals from Callum and two from Leo.

Dartington B Report
On Monday 1st December, Dartington B attended the fourth week of the hockey league held at KEVICC. The team only played two games this week and had to do it without two missing players due to illness in Lola and Erin. The first match was up against strong opposition in Ipplepen B. The first goal was cracking by Ralphie. After that, Finn saved a powerful strike to keep the score 1v0 to Dartington B. The team put the pressure on Ipplepen B and they got what they deserved with another fine goal from Ralphie making the final score 2v0. Dartington B kept up the good form in their second match against Broadhempston B. Strong play in defence from Felix meant the squad could stop Broadhempston B from scoring. Hard work across the midfield from Riz, Ed and Illias set up chances to score. Millie almost scored her first league goal, but good defending meant the ball could be cleared. Ralphie was given the chance and scored a goal late on in the match followed by a first goal of the league from Kian to make the final score 2v0. Dartington B go into the final week of the league as league leaders knowing two more good performances could allow the shield to make its journey back to Dartington Primary School.
This week, everybody was invited to join the local hockey club (Dart). Certain people were also asked if they would like to join Dart Hockey Club. You don't have to join but everyone is welcome at Dart.

Dartington A Report
On Monday evening, Dartington A played spectacularly well knowing that they had already qualified for the cup. Without the unwell Maddie, the squad had to play with just six players. They won their first game against a Grove B team 3-1. Super defending from Ziggy and Reuben and goals from Callum, Leo and a super strike from Robin saw them cruise to victory. The next match as a fixture looked pretty tough, but super attacking skills from Leon and great last minute defending from Lochie meant Dartington A beat South Brent A with a stunning 3-1 result! In that match Amber, Leo and Callum scored nice solo goals. The last match was extremely difficult against a strong Broadhempston A side, as they narrowly won 1-0. Next week, the 'A' team will be playing in the cup, a competition for the top half of the current league table.

Dartington B Report
Darttington B looked to consolidate their league position towards the top of the bottom half of the league in preparation to qualify for the plate competition next week; a competition for the bottom half of the league from week 4 onwards. The 'B' team, without the influential Ralphie, took on South Brent A first and defended strongly with good work from Lola, Riz and Kian to deny the Brent attackers with clear opportunities to score. A strong defensive display ended with a credible 0v0 draw. A strong Grove A was their next opponents, who have only conceeded 5 goals all tournament, 3 of which were against our 'A' team. Again some fantastic hockey from Millie and Finn, who were really getting stuck in to a team who has been playing hockey much longer than our 'B' team but the opposition's quality told as they ran out eventual winners 1v0. The last game of the week saw the 'B' team up against Broadhempston B. Building on from the confidence of a narrow loss to an excellent Grove A team, the 'B' team started strongly with good positional wide play from Erin and super determined defending from Illias and Ed. The pressure told as two excellent strikes from Felix was enough to secure a 2v0 win.
Next week, the 'B' team are up against other teams around them in the plate competition looking to secure a top two position.

Dartington A Report
On Monday 17th November, Dartington A performed fantastically winning all of their games in the Schools Hockey League. In the first match, the sqaud played against Ipplepen B and cruised past them as Leo hit two, Amber scored from close range and Callum scored a screamer. The next match saw Dartington A play the Grove A (who had won all of their games last week) and Leo scored a stunning hattrick but unfortunately conceeded a goal at the end of the game as it ended 3v1. Quarter of an hour later, the 'A' team played a strong South Brent B side and they earnt a narrow 2v0 win as Leo scored both goals. The final match for the 'A' team was against arch-rivals Dartington B. Fortunately, the 'A' team won but it was a a difficult game as the final result was 2v1, Callum and Leo with the goals. Overall it was a fantastic week of hockey, and as you can see, Dartington A climb to second in the league.

On Monday 17 November a hockey tournament was held at KEVICC Astro turf for local primary schools. South Brent, The Grove, Dartington, Ipplepen, Broadhempston and Landscove all took part with players from years 4-6. There was a competitive and friendly atmosphere throughout the tournament.
Dartington B's first match was a terrific 1:1 draw against a good Landscove team, our goal being scored by Ralphie. The second match was against The Grove B and again Ralphie scored a massive 3 goals meaning we won by 3:0. The 3rd Match was against Ipplepen A team, a very strong and established team meaning we lost 5:0. The final match was against Dartington A team and we lost 2:1, again Ralphie getting the goal.
I feel as captain of the B team every single player tried their hardest. Well done B team.

Football CVL
November 2014
The year 5/6 'Shear Soccer' Football squad were back in action again yesterday as they looked to improve on their only previous outing back in October. After being given a new formation to trial, captain Leo set up his squad in preparation for the afternoons matches.
They started the meeting with a fixture against The Grove B. Although the squad initally found the new formation tricky, they soon got to grips with how it works and ran out 1v0 winners with the winning goal coming from the captain himself. A quick reminder of the players' roles and how the formation should work between matches was enough for them to put it in to practice with great success. Space was created by all of the players to allow goals to be scored from Leo and a brace from Ezra; the second of which was a thunderous strike in off the right post, after some good work by Finn.
Again back-to-back matches resulted in the beginning of weary legs but the squad put in another good display and two late goals, again from Leo and Ezra, was enough to sink St Johns B. A final round match against The Grove A proved to be a stern test. Dartington legs were really beginning to tire, but the same could have been said for our opponents. Max and Crow had fantastic opportunities to score, but The Grove A goalkeeper was good to match the strikes to keep Dartington at bay. A good defensive display from Lee, Joe and Oisin, and a fantastic save from Remi in the dying seconds allowed him and the squad to keep their fourth consecutive clean sheet with the final score resulting in a 0v0 draw.
The squad did fantastically well to remain undefeated, not conceeding a goal during the whole afternoon. Well done boys!

Hockey League 2014
November 2014
After the success of last years hockey squad, finishing runners up to a very strong South Brent team, the current crop of budding hockey stars took to their first league meeting at KEVICC on Monday during a rather wet and damp affair. That didn't spoil the childrens' spirits as both teams played incredibly well considering a lot of the children only picked up a hockey stick for the first time just five weeks ago.
Our 'A' team started with a very difficult fixture against Ipplepen. Although they put in a lot of hard work and defended incredibly well, the strength of the opposition was a little too much eventually losing 7v0. They soon dusted themselves off though and put in sterling performances against Broadhempston B and Landscove winning both games 3v0 and 3v2 respectively.
The 'B' team also had a difficult fixture to start. Like the 'A' team, they were also up against Ipplepen in the form of their 'B' team too. A magnificent defensive performance resulted in the 'B' team coming away with a very hard fought 0v0 draw. They also played Broadhempston A, previous champions, and South Brent B; two very difficult fixtures. They worked very hard off the ball to defend stoutly but unfortuantely the quality of the opposition eventually told as both games resulted in 3v0 defeats.
Both teams will be looking to gain further points next week in order to move up the table. Well done to everyone involved, a fantastic first week of hockey despite the appauling weather conditions!

Gifted & Talented Success
November 2014
In September 2014, two of our identified Gifted & Talented children attended a G&T workshop at KEVICC. We are extremely pleased and proud to announce that Lily (4D) has been selected to attend the Totnes Learning Community SUPERSTARS group where she will be given sporting opportunities to further develop her sporting ability. In addition, Finn (4D) has been selected to attend the South Dartmoor Partnership Elite group. He will be given opportunities to participate and compete against other children of the similar gift he possesses. Huge congratulations to both Lily and Finn and we wish you every success in your future sporting opportunities at KEVICC and South Dartmoor.
Bronze Sports Mark
September 2014
National Recognition for Sport
We are very proud to announce that Dartington Primary School has been recognised for its increased sporting development during the 2013-14 academic year.
The Sainsbury's School Games Mark is a Government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Last year, we achieved a School Games Bronze award and we will shortly receive a plaque to proudly display in school. Please come along and have a look at it when it arrives!
Huge congratulations to the children for their hard work and commitment they have shown because without them we would not have the squads and teams to represent our school. In addition, we would like to thank the parents for their continued support of the development of sport at Dartington and the staff who have given up many hours delivering sessions and coaching the children at these events in their own time.
